The book “names in stone”[namen in steen] of Bram van Dam, management controller at our faculty, and co-author Ger Snaak about the war monument in ‘t Zandt is nominated for the ‘compliment for a warmonument’ award by the foundation ‘ De verhalen van Groningen ', The province of Groningen and The national committee for 4 and 5 May.

In their book (2015), Bram and Ger uncover the stories behind the 35 names engraved in the 2nd World War monument in ‘t Zandt, a town in northeast-Groningen. Bram van Dam says that he has always been interested in local history. After he found out that his old village mate was working on uncovering the stories behind the 35 names, Bram did not hesitate and wanted to help. In total, Bram and Ger dedicated more than two years to uncovering the faces and stories behind the names on the monument. “It was a lot of work but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world”, says Bram.

The book got nominated for the award because “it is a monument in itself” according to the committee.

The winner of the award will receive a trophy, specially designed by the Groninger artist Jumi Kleinbuinink, and 1000 euros for supporting their activity. The award ceremony will be held on 29 April in the Veenkoloniaal Museum in Veendam.
