If a group transporter is already driving through a rural area where the population is declining, he can also deliver the (foreign) newspapers, magazines and library books to the village. These smart combinations of traffic flows, ‘freight hitchhiking’ is the topic of one of the major research projects in which the Operations department of the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen is participating. Top institute logistic Dinalog is starting six new R&D projects, of which three will go to the RUG.
Besides freight hitchhiking there are research projects in Groningen on home delivery of internet sales and on the logistical process regarding the maintenance of capital goods. Moreover, the three projects relate to the research priorities of the University of Groningen: sustainability, energy and healthy ageing.
Research financer Dinalog is the only top institute in the field of logistics in the Netherlands and is a partnership between universities and business to innovate the logistical sector. The goal is to make Holland the European market leader in the management of transnational freight flows in 2020.
