Expenses: living and studying in Groningen

Before you come to study at the University of Groningen and start living in Groningen, you have to be aware of the costs involved: tuition fee, study related expenses and living expenses.

Study related expenses

Please note that the tuition fee does not cover the cost of study materials like books, readers, photocopies, etc. These study related expenses vary per programme, but each year the University sets a maximum. For academic year 2011-2012 the total study related expenses for students may not exceed € 680 per year.

 

Living expenses 

In addition to your tuition fee an cost of study materials, you have to take into account the cost of living in Groningen. This includes the rent for your student accommodation, money for food, clothing, transportation, insurance, etc. These costs are not includen in your tuition fee!

Financial support? 

The University is committed to recognizing excellence in academic achievement through offering a number of scholarships for international students and researchers. Besides University scholarships, a number of grants awarded by the Dutch government, the EU and (inter)national organizations, such as World Bank or the Ford Foundation, are available. Please note that these scholarship programmes are usually highly selective: for every scholarship available, there will be a lot of candidates.

* EEA (European Economic Area) countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom. Although Switzerland is not an EEA member, Swiss nationals are also charged the EEA tuition fee.
