Is it possible to calculate the optimal squad for Manchester United Football Club? Can you predict the price trend for the coming year of a specific equity fund? Econometrics and Operations Research is about finding solutions to complex problems. It is a mixture of economic theory, applied mathematics and statistics.
General information
Every day the news is full of macroeconomic figures. Just think about productivity rates, stock prices or growth rates. Econometricians use this immense amount of economic data to predict the future. If you decide to study Econometrics and Operations Research you will learn to construct mathematical models to analyse economic data. With these models you will be able to compute the unemployment rates of a country, the Gross National Product, the stock price of a company or the future exchange rate of the Euro.
After the propaedeutic phase
The courses in the propaedeutic phase serve as the foundation for the remainder of the programme. Throughout the programme you will deepen and broaden your knowledge in the four major topics: Mathematical Economics, Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Studies.
After your bachelor
There are many Master’s programmes available in the faculty through which you can gain supplementary knowledge and acquire credentials that might be required in your chosen field. For instance, the MSc in Econometrics, Operations Research and Actuarial Studies (EORAS), in which you would specialise in one of the three areas, gives you an opportunity to add to your qualifications. Most Master’s programmes take one year to complete. There is also a two-year Research Master’s programme that serves as a steppingstone to a career in academia.
Graduates are found in a broad spectrum of occupations where IT, mathematical, and problem-solving skills are needed. Some job examples are:
-
optimizing firm logistics
-
devising new insurance products
-
calculating the financial consequences of different policies
-
and of course a career as academic researcher
