The faculty’s research policy aims at encouraging fundamental scientific research of a high international standard and providing the training and research environment for research master and PhD students. In addition, the faculty stimulates related applied research.
SOM Research Institutes and Graduate School
Fundamental scientific research is concentrated in SOM, the coordinating research institute with 5 institutes/programmes. SOM is also the Graduate School and offers a PhD programme and a Research Master programme in Economics & Business. The honours bachelor programme in Economics & Business is part of the graduate school as well.
It combines and stimulates disciplinary and interdisciplinary research meeting international standards. And it provides the training and research environment for research master and PhD students. In 2007, approximately 125 research fellows and 125 PhD students belong to SOM. SOM was recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts Sciences in May 1998. This accreditation has been renewed in 2003.
The mission of SOM is to stimulate monodisciplinary and interdisciplinary research related to the firm in its economic environment and to provide a PhD and Research Master programme with a high international standard.
Contract research and centres
For the commissioning of contract research the faculty has established a number of Centres of Expertise. These centres bundle their expertise and offer products and services to companies and institutions in and outside the Netherlands.

N.W. Posthumus Institute
Until January 1st, 2010 the faculty also hosted the N.W. Posthumus Institute, a national research school in the field of economic history. As of that date you can find the NWP Institute at the Leiden University

Career Office
The career office coordinates trainee posts. It provides intermediation between companies/institutions and students.
Science Shop
The
Science Shop
assists companies/institutions in formulating their research questions and acts as projectmanager for different kinds of research.
The Science Shop is an intermediate between knowledge in the faculty E&B and Society.
Related Institutes
The faculty participates in two research institutes at the university level, GSG, Globalisation Studies Groningen and EDREC, the Energy Delta Research Centre.
