Page content: FunctionThe Occupational Health and Safety Act prescribes that companies and institutions should have a safety policy. This means that functional actions should have been undertaken to keep the safety and health risks as small as possible and that people can act efficiently in case of emergency to limit the consequences as much as possible. The University Board is responsible for the safety policy. The faculty boards and the boards of university services must execute that policy within their own management unit, of which business emergency service is one. DutiesIn case of emergency, such as fire, accidents, etc, the Duisenberg Building Business emergency service team is primarily responsible for the extinction and limitation of consequences. The Business emergency service team functions as an outpost for professional emergency services (fire brigade, ambulance, doctor, police). This limits the operational task of the Business emergency service team to act in the period that lies between the start of the calamity and the arrival of professional emergency services. The duties, the organisation, the training and the equipment of the Business emergency service are tuned to provide help in those moments. First the porters (all of whom are Business emergency service member) are warned (scouts). They act independently as stated in the instructions in the business emergency plan. If needed, they will be called to do specific tasks, such as, for example, checking the clearing-out, closing cleared-out areas, evacuation of persons who cannot save themselves, etc. Concerning the Business emergency service duties the emphasis is on first aid, extinguishing a starting fire, clearing out a building, saving people and comforting, guiding and, possibly, assisting professional emergency services. The person in charge of the Business emergency service is the manager of Facility Services Zernike West as head of the Business emergency service (Mr Bert Dieters), assisted by four team leaders (M. Baan, W. Koster, J. van Gestel and T. Huisman). In his absence the stand-in manager of Facility Services Zernike West (Tonnie Huisman) takes his place. The porter service is under direct guidance of the head Business emergency service. All Business emergency service team members are trained in using small fire extinguish equipments and First Aid, including resuscitation. Currently, there are eleven Business emergency service members who hold a certificate to use the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). The device is available in the First Aid room of the Duisenberg Building. Every Business emergency service member can be called individually or in groups by means of a pager, telephone or sound system. Every Business emergency service member has a jacket and a First Aid kit.
