Profile of the University
The University of Groningen has a rich academic tradition dating back to 1614. This tradition yielded the first female student and the first female lecturer in the Netherlands (Aletta Jacobs, Medical Sciences, 1878), the first Dutch astronaut (Wubbo Ockels, Faculty of Natural Sciences, PhD student from 1973-1978) and the first president of the European Central Bank (Wim Duisenberg, Economics, PhD student from 1961-1965).
Geographically, the University is rooted in the North of the Netherlands, a region very close to its heart. At the same time, the University has always been very international. Our researchers work at the forefront of knowledge and within an extensive national and internationals, affirming our worldwide reputation. Today, the University of Groningen classifies in the top 100 of the Shanghai ARWU, the Times Higher Education (THE) and the QS World University ranking lists, the most influential ranking lists in the academic world.
For the last three years the University of Groningen has won the Certificate for Excellent International Student Satisfaction by StudyPortals. Based on thousands of reviews, the University of Groningen scored highest on international student satisfaction among all universities and universities of applied science in The Netherlands.
