Tibor Hortobágyi appointed professor in Movement and Healthy Ageing

On January 1, 2012, T. Hortobágyi, PhD, was appointed professor in Movement and Healthy Ageing at the University Medical Center Groningen. The chair focuses on movement and healthy ageing, which is at the core of RUG/UMCG’s theme Health Ageing. His work examines the acute and chronic neuromechanical adaptations to exercise in young and old adults and seeks the mechanisms of how quality of life can be promoted and maintained through physical exercise.

Tibor Hortobágyi (Hungary, 1955) received his bachelor degree in Exercise and Sport Sciences at the University College, now a part of the Semmelweis Medical University in Budapest, Hungary. He continued his education at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, USA, where in 1990 he defended his thesis entitled “Specificity of muscular fatigue and force enhancing mechanisms in power and endurance athletes”. Subsequently he became professor and director of biomechanics and exercise neuroscience at East Carolina University, Greenville, USA. In 2011 he was appointed at the Department of Human Movement Sciences at the UMCG.
