In this thesis, the role of adenosine and its receptors in bronchoconstriction and airway inflammation was investigated in patients with asthma and patients with COPD using sputum and blood cells, airway biopsies, and in vitro mast cell cultures. This thesis describes differences in adenosine receptor expression between patients with asthma or with COPD, and healthy subjects and, suggesting a role for adenosine and its receptors in both diseases.
