Information about the city
The ancient Hanseatic city of Groningen, with 190,000 inhabitants is situated in the north of the Netherlands. As the economic and cultural capital of the region, the city enjoys a bustling reputation, while retaining a safe community character. Full of restaurants, pubs, art galleries, theatres, museums and bookshops Groningen is suited to its youthful population, and its inner-city markets and wide variety of shops attract a great number of regional and German visitors every day. The university has a visible presence: the historic buildings in the inner-city tell the tale of a rich academic tradition, while the University Medical Center Groningen is an example of ground-breaking architecture. A great number of students are enjoying sports, and cultural events and festivals at reasonable prices.
