Find books

Where do you find books?

All books from the collection of the Central Medical Library and the University Library can be found via SmartCat.

Most books are available online. Some books are (also) available in printed form in the Central Medical Library.

Or check out this Library Guide with all our books (printed and e-books) sorted by subject:

Where to find mandatory textbooks for students?

Mandatory textbooks can be found in this overview:

This is an up-to-date list of all required textbooks, arranged per discipline and year.

You can see at a glance whether we only have a study book in printed form, or also as an e-book. Click the title to go to SmartCat and request the book.

Non-circulating mandatory textbooks
We also have a few copies of each mandatory textbook available behind the library desk that may only be used in the library or in the Silent Study Areas. You have to hand in your student card for this. These books must be returned the same day.

Lending card

Activate your UMCG card

You can activate your UMCG card to work as a library card. Then you can request and borrow publications from all University of Groningen libraries, in the Netherlands or abroad, free of charge.

Use your student card as lending card

Students can borrow books by using their student cards. It is not necessary to activate student cards. If we do not have an article or book in the collection, students can request it from other libraries in the Netherlands. This is very easy to do via SmartCat and is free.

Borrow books

How to request and collect books?

You can request books from the Central Medical Library collection via SmartCat

You can of course also take the book from the shelve yourself and borrow it at the lendig desk.

How?

  • search for the book and click the title
  • click the 'Request' button
  • choose a pick-up location (University Library or Central Medical Library)

You will receive an email as soon as the requested book is ready for you.
On request, we also send books for UMCG employees by internal mail, for this we need your UMCG internal zip code (huispostcode). Call or e-mail the CMB: 361 6200 / cmb@umcg.nl

Book not available?

And if we do not have a publication in our collection, you can easily request it from other libraries.
How can you request a book at another library?

Have your books forwarded to your workplace!

Are you a UMCG employee? Then you can ask us to send library books by internal mail to your workplace.

How?

  • Have you already activated your UMCG card as a library card? If not, do so first: Activate your UMCG card
  • Search for the desired book in SmartCat, click the title and than click the Request button
  • Mail or call the CMB to forward the book to you: cmb@umcg.nl, 36 16 200. (We need your internal postal code for this)

Returning books

No need to renew

As long as no other borrower needs a book, its loan will be automatically renewed: for staff up to a maximum of 24 times 4 weeks, for students and others to a maximum of 12 times 4 weeks.

When another borrower reserves a book, you will have to return it before the end of the loan period. In such case, you'll receive a notification by e-mail.

When and where can you return your books?

You can return books during our opening hours. At the University Library you can also return books outside opening hours in the 24/7 Bookbox outside the University Library City Centre (Poststraat). Or return your books by (internal) mail. Please send them to: Centrale Medische Bibliotheek FC41 , Postbus 30001, 9700 RB Groningen.
