University strategy and ambitions
Internationalization is a key element in the university strategy.
The University of Groningen has a strong international profile and multicultural environment, and high ambitions for further internationalization. The University currently hosts approximately 4,000 international students from at least 120 countries and more than 20% of the academic staff comes from abroad.
The Office for International Relations (BIS)
The Office for International Relations (BIS) plays an important part in the internationalization of the University. The office advises the Board of the University about its internationalization policy, and is an intermediary between the Board of the University, the faculties and external institutions.

Tasks and responsibilities stretch from strategy and policy development, strategic partnerships, European programmes such as Erasmus LLP, Erasmus Mundus, Tempus, and internationalization at home.
The office consist of a small number of policy staff and project managers and works closely together with the International Service Desk, and admissions under the Department of Student Affairs.
