The bachelors Biology and Life Science & Technology (LS&T) consist of two parts: Major (two and a half year) and a Minor (half year of study).
Major
You can major in:
- Biology
- Behaviour & Neurosciences
- Biomedical engineering
- Biomedical sciences
- Ecology
- Marine biology
- Molecular Biology
In the first semester aspects are taught that are necessary for all life sciences students, regardless of their major. It incorporates basic material about the main groups of organisms(micro-organisms, plants and animals), incorporates two different methodological approaches (descriptive and experimental) and the different levels of integretion (cell, organism, population, community and ecosystem). The involvement between these areas will receive attention.
Modules are for example: animal ecology, immunology, humane food, marine biology, molecular microbiology, fauna and pharmacology. A 7 week training in research is also part of the programme.
Minor
The minor (first semester of the third year) consists of a package of modules (for instance in chemistry of psychology) which can be freely chosen.
Schedules
The schedule is divided into periods of 10 weeks in which three modules of 5 ECTS each are accomodated. Each module treats one area of expertise that will conclude at the end of the module. Participation in a module is generally speaking tied to a specific set of admission requirements considering courses in Basic Education.
At the end of the Bachelor (end of third year) the bachelors examination can be taken that will provide for admission to a number of master programmes in several areas of Biology and related sciences.
Language
The bachelor programme is taught in Dutch. Some modules, however, may be taught in English.
