Databases accessible world-wide for University of Groningen students and staff

The Proxy Server of the University of Groningen Library

The Proxy Server of the University of Groningen Library offers safe, authorised access from outside the RUG to databases, bibliographical databases and electronic journals under licence – from any computer in the world.

If you want access from within the RUG network you do not need to use this Proxy. You will only be asked to log in on the Proxy Server if you want to consult the library sources from outside the RUG network. You only need to do this once per browser session; the password is then stored in the cache.

If you want access from home via a commercial Internet Provider such as Zonnet or XS4All, you will need to use this service.

Summary
Anyone who clicks a web file on our web site for which the RUG has a licence will

  • get immediate access if he/she is working within the RUG-IP domain
  • be asked to log in if they are coming from outside the RUG-IP domain. If the log-in is accepted, the Proxy will guide the rest of the session; if not, an explanation that this service is only available for staff and students of the RUG will appear.

User name and password

You will need a user name and password to log in to the Proxy Server.

  • Students
Students can log in using the computer account they received when registering at the university. This means that you log into the Proxy Server using the same log-in data you use for Nestor, Webmail and ProGRESS-WWW (your user name is your student number preceded by an 's': e.g. s1234567).

  • Staff
RUG staff can log into the Proxy Server using their RUGnumber. This is the number you use to start up your Options Terms of Employment Model, to order products via Surfspot and soon to read your e-mail, log in in the mornings, etc. This RUGnumber consists of your 6-digit personnel number (the number on your vacation sheet) preceded by a 'p', for example p130066, and the password you will be sent by mail.
NB Do not use your Novell log-in name to access the Proxy Server.

  • UMCG users
Staff of the UMCG can log in using their proxy account. You can find more information on the web site of the Central Medical Library.
