Universities in the Netherlands have a so-called Open Choice agreement with Springer. This agreement stipulates that authors working with Dutch universities do not need to pay for publishing articles Open Access. Authors are advised to make use of this opportunity offered by Springer to publish open access! If you are author of a Springer article, and are affiliated with a Dutch University, you will NOT receive an invoice for publishing open access with Springer in 2010.

In Springer Open Choice, all articles are peer-reviewed as usual; open access is introduced to further wider dissemination among the scientific community.

Within the framework of the existing licensing agreement with UKB (the consortium of Dutch university libraries and the National Library of the Netherlands), Springer undertakes to offer free and immediate world-wide access to articles which have been accepted for publication in one of Springer's journals in 2010 by authors affiliated with universities in the Netherlands.

Springer permits simultaneous publication of the articles in open access institutional repositories of UKB members (DARE)

When your article has been accepted by a Springer journal you will receive an email with a link leading you to the Springer MyPublication pages:
Here you will be asked to indicate your affiliation. Please note that all Dutch universities are listed! Select your university.
On the next screen you should receive the following confirmation. If you don't, please contact the Springer contact person at your institution:

History
In June 2007, UKB (the consortium of Dutch university libraries and the National Library of the Netherlands) and Springer signed a declaration of intent for a pilot project to study the economic effects of open access publishing
–
the first ever by a large STM publisher and a consortium of libraries in this area. In September 2007 the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) expressed its support for Springer Open Choice as a publishing option for their grantees. Similar projects were agreed with the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in February 2008 and with the California Digital Library on behalf of the ten campuses of the University of California in January 2009.
