About the collection


Collection building

The faculties and the University Library co-ordinate their acquisition policies as much as possible.

The faculty collect publications on current scientific research and teaching. The University Library offers a limited core collection for each discipline, containing mainly textbooks (compulsory literature) and (bibliographic) reference works. In addtion to this, the University Library collects interdisciplinary studies.

The collection of the Library of Mathematics and Natural Sciences consists of about 100,000 volumes and over 200 subscriptions to printed journals and monographs series. Apart from this many

electronic subscriptions to journals and series are available for RUG students and staff via so-called package deals.


Designation in the Catalogue

The entire Library of Mathematics and Natural Sciences collection is included in the library catalogue. Library of Mathematics and Natural Sciences material can be recognized by the following designations:


Subject classification

All books and journals are classified according to subject. The Library of Mathematics and Natural Sciences uses subject codes from the local library classification  [PDF]. Searching on subject codes in the Catalogue is possible for books as well as for journals (choose the option in the Catalogue: decentral subject code).

The journals are placed on the shelves in alphabetical order and the books according to subject (shelf number). In order to find an appropriate subject code the local library classification   [PDF]can be consulted.
Each subject code consists of a number of figures combined with a letter.The figures refer to the main categories, while the letters indicate the subjects within the category.
