General information - house Rules

General

  • Access to the library is free; visitors without a valid pass or student card have a restricted service;

  • Smoking, eating and drinking is not allowed. Only water bottles with a cap are allowed in the study rooms;
  • After 17.00 hours we have limited services. Questions concerning library cards and interlibrary loan can only be answered in day time;
  • Mobile phoning is forbidden in the library (also in the computer room);
  • Visitors should maintain silence in the study rooms as much as possible;
  • You are required to follow any and all instructions given by the library staff. Members of staff are authorised to ask you for your student card or other identification papers;
  • Individuals who refuse to abide by the regulations after receiving a written or oral warning from library staff will be excluded from further use of library services. In cases not provided for in the regulations, the librarian or his/her substitute is authorized to take measures to maintain order.

Borrowing

  • Books can be borrowed with a valid pass or student card. Members of staff may request a pass at the lending desk of the library.
  • The loan period is 4 weeks, unless stated otherwise. It may be renewed on request, unless the publications concerned have been reserved.
  • Borrowing is free. Borrowed publications must be returned no later than the last day of the loan period. If this period has expired, the library will send the borrower an overdue notice. The fees for the first overdue are € 0.50, for the second € 1.50, and for the third € 2.50. The fee for overdue DVD's is € 0,50 a day. Once the second notice has been sent, the borrower's library privileges are suspended. Only when books involved have been returned and the overdue fees have been paid will this suspension be lifted. The borrower is to return any borrowed works in good condition.
  • Not on loan: magazines, theses and books fitted with a red dot.
  • Part of the collection with a red dot can be found at the library desk. These are the study books of the current block. When you hand in your student card you can use these books in the library. They have to be back when the library closes.  If not you have to pay a fine; 10 euros for a day, 25 euros for a weekend.
  • Students may borrow 30 books, members of staff 60. Temporary expansion is possible.
  • University staff can request books from other RUG-libraries free of charge. These books are then sent to the staff member's own library. To do this, first locate the item in the catalogue of the RU Groningen, then press the IBL request button which will take you to Picarta. You can then request it.

  • Borrowed books can be handed in at any University of Groningen library!

  • Questions concerning library cards can only be answered in day-time.

  • The lending regulations of the State University Groningen are applicable. See also lending information.
