The Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies


The Netherlands Research School for Medieval Studies was established in January 1994. It is officially recognised as a national Research School by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). Six Dutch universities participate in the Research School: Leiden, Groningen, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Free University Amsterdam, Catholic University Nijmegen. The Research School has the following principal missions:

  • to stimulate and co-ordinate medievalist research in the Netherlands
  • to promote research contacts between medievalist researchers within the Netherlands and without,
  • to co-ordinate training of medievalist graduate students within the Netherlands.

The directorate and secretariat are located at Groningen. The Research School is financed by all six participating universities, with an important extra support from the University of Groningen.
The Academic Director of the school is Prof. Dr. A.J. Vanderjagt; the secretary is Mr Martin de Ruiter.
