Organization
Since 2001 the foundation GBE-FMF (Stichting Grote Buitenlandse Excursie(s) - Fysisch-
Mathematische Faculteitsvereniging) organizes intercontinental scientific excursions. Every two
years 25 students and two members of the scientific staff visit another destination. The journey
spans about three weeks and has two purposes: to get aquainted with scientific research outside
of Europe and to get in touch with other cultures.
The board of the foundation GBE-FMF merely supervises, the excursion is organized by a
committee they guide. The committee arranges a daily program in collaboration with the
University of Groningen and the visited universities, institutes and companies. Furthermore the
committee is responsible for the aquisition of funding and casestudies and it selects the
participants by CV.
We offer
To finance the trip twenty students excecute a small research project, a casestudy. Commisioned
by a company or an institute, the students work preferably in pairs. The students resemble the
universitary disciplines from members of the FMF: (applied) physics, (applied) mathematics,
computer science and astronomy. They can work with analytical matters and are capable of
dealing with complex problems!
For the casestudies we mark at high quality research. To preserve this we arrange guidance from
a member of scientific staff at the University of Groningen. Furthermore we believe that if the
committee keeps good contact with guider, the students and the company the progress is
monitored in a progressive way.
The casestudies are executed in the Netherlands and span 120 hours of work per student. The
following are examples of ways for casestudies:
- Design and execution of market research
- Design and execution of scientific research
- Creation of/ enhancement of a mathematical model
- Proces analysus and/or optimalisation
- Measurements using exquipment available at the university
- Statistical analysis
- Strategical Assignments
- Assignments in information and communication technology
After completion of the casestudy, the cooperation is evaluated with the involved company or
institute.
In short
This is an opportunity for companies and institutions to have a project completed on a low budget,
while being in close contact with high potential future employees.
