Groningen, July 7-10, 2008

 

General infomation

The meeting will be organized in the city of Groningen, the capital city of the province Groningen, the Netherlands, from July 7 –July 10. The city of Groningen is the home of the second oldest University in the Netherlands, founded in 1614. The university is home to one of the European largest centers for the integrative study of behavioral neurobiology ( CBN ), with a wide array of research groups that study behavior from its ecology and evolution to molecular neurobiology, and largest Dutch graduate schools Behavioral and Cognitive Neurosciences ( BCN ).

Groningen is charming city in the northern part of the Netherlands, about 180 km from Amsterdam. With approx. 180.000 inhabitants of which more than 40.000 are students, it is a real student city, with a wide variety of pubs and restaurants in the city center. The conference venue will be the in the brand new education building at the University Medical Center Groningen which is a 10 minute walk from the city center.

Transportation

Groningen can be easily reached from Schiphol airport, which is near Amsterdam, by train (2,5 hours).

The trains run twice every hour (one direct connection and one with one transfer).

Tickets can be bought at the desk in Schiphol plaza or at ticket machines, located at Schiphol Plaza and the luggage claim area. Exact departure times and ticket prizes can be found at the website of the Dutch railway .

Several car rental companies have an office at Schiphol airport.

 The easiest way to get around in the city is by bike or by walking. Most hotels are located in and near the city center, and thus walking distance from shops and restaurants.

  • Several musea are located in the city, of which the Groninger museum is the most obvious, located in the canal next to the train station
  • Groningen has 3 movie theaters, 2 of which are located downtown
  • For nature lovers: the salt marshes and the Wadden islands. With low tide it is possible to walk to the islands. Zoo Noorderdierenpark at Emmen (about 1 hr. from Groningen). It’s one of the best Zoo’s in Europe with also many attractions indoors (a.o. a butterfly garden, South American rainforest, sharks).
  • Historical sites of interest in the area: the stronghold Bourtange, Borgen (old castle like mansions in the province), Hunebedden (dolmens) located in the province south of Groningen
