Programma-opties

  • Smart Materials (track)

  • Chemistry of Life (track)

  • Sustainable Chemistry and Energy (track)

Practicals

The Groningen science and engineering programmes stand out for their academic excellence. The work pace in the first year is generally high and the courses contents demanding. The first year curriculum concentrates on laying a sound basis for our engineering and natural science disciplines. This allows our students to choose their specialisation tracks already in their second Bachelor's year.

Voorbeeldvakken in de Smart materials track: molecular design, soft molecular materials, trends in polymer science

Voorbeeldvakken in de Sustainable chemistry and energy track: physical organic and photo-chemistry, green chemistry and technology, electrochemistry and energy

Voorbeeldvakken in de Chemistry of life track: bio-energetics and metabolism, chemical biology, cellular chemistry

Studeren in het buitenland

  • Studeren in het buitenland is facultatief
  • Maximaal 30 EC

Exchange: All our science and engineering programmes offer study abroad possibilities at a number of partner institutions. Our partners include top-100 universities in Europe (for example in Germany, UK, and Sweden) and in the USA, China, South-East Asia, and South America. Our exchange programmes have a typical duration of one semester and count toward your final degree.

Mogelijk na goedkeuring van de examencommissie

(Bindend) studieadvies

  • Minimaal 45 EC in de eerste 12 maanden (bindend)

You will be issued a study advice at the end your first year of study. You can expect a positive study advice if you have earned at least 45 ECTS credit points (out of a total of 60 ECTS; most course units are 5 ECTS). If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative study advice, you will not be allowed to continue your degree programme. You will receive a preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you are.

Please contact your study advisor as soon as possible if you have any questions about the Binding Study Advice system.

Waarom in Groningen?

Assessed by students as the best Chemistry degree in the country in the Elsevier ranking

In Groningen you can study either Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. During the entire first year you can switch between them, if you wish.

Explore before you choose your specialisation. The first part of Year 1 is designed to give you a broad introduction to the three Chemistry specialisations.

Our research is among the finest in the world. Our materials research ranks in the world's top ten!

Our faculty is the home of the 2016 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, Ben Feringa, and the Nobel Prize winner in Physics, Frits Zernike.

Moving abroad gave me the chance to experience a new culture and meet so many people from all over the world

“I moved here from Belfast, Northern Ireland to study Chemistry at the University of Groningen. Moving abroad gave me the chance to experience a new culture and meet so many people from all over the world. I have become so much more independent since I moved here and experienced so many new things.

My Chemistry course is interesting and challenging at the same time. The lecturers are very enthusiastic and they all speak great English. This makes for a great study environment where it's easy to learn. The University of Groningen is great and has a lovely campus, I loved it here the moment I arrived. Groningen is a great city full of students and internationals, that has a great buzz about it and always offers something to do! If there's any advice that I may give to future students, it would be that you need to look for accommodation as soon as you can. The closer it gets to July or August, the harder it will be to find a room”.

    Challenging, but very interesting

'I'm loving it here. The pace of study took some time to get used to, because each tutorial discusses a whole chapter of our study book. But you'll be fine as long as you attend all the lectures, which deal with all the material for the exam.

I especially enjoyed Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecules, which are all about reactions and how they work. I find subjects like Physical Chemistry and Spectroscopy challenging, but very interesting. Alongside my studies I am a member of the rowing club Aegir, where I also stop in occasionally for drinks. I’m sharing a flat with two friends from secondary school, which is fantastic! We often eat together or go out to play sports.’
