The department of Artificial Intelligence is part of the faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences(FWN) of the
University
of
Groningen
. Artificial Intelligence has, being a scientific department, two functions: education and research.
Education
Artificial Intelligence is an interdisciplinary study and it has a five-year program. The curriculum consists of material that is taught by the AI staff. Beside that, there are courses in the field of Psychology, Computer Science, Neuroscience, Linguistics, Dutch, Information Science and Philosophy.
The education at the AI department includes a three-year bachelor and two two-year masters, i.e. the bachelor AI, the master AI and the master HMC (Human-Machine Communication). The bachelor AI and the master AI are organized by the AI department. The master HMC is organized by the AI department in cooperation with the department of Psychology (also part of the faculty of GMW). The director of education, dr. T. Andringa, is responsible for the organization and the quality of the education.
Research
The research that is done at the AI department belongs to the research institute ALICE – Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Engineering. The institute ALICE contains four research programs:
- Autonomous Perceptive Systems
- Cognitive Modeling
- Multi-Agent Systems
- Language, Sound and Cognition
In each of these programs research is conducted by
PhD students
, post-docs and the scientific staff of the AI department. The director of education, prof. dr. L. Schomaker, is responsible for the research at the AI department.
