Artificial Intelligence is a five-year program and it consists of a three-year Bachelor and a two-year Master. The AI department at the University of Groningen offers two Masters, i.e. the Master Artificial Intelligence and the Master Human-Machine Communication (HMC).
Bachelor AI
The Bachelor Artificial Intelligence consists of a propaedeutic year (first year) and a second and a third year. The propaedeutic year contains elementary courses that are crucial for artificial intelligence, like psychology, linguistics, logics and mathematics. The knowledge that is obtained during the first year serves as a basis for the remaining years.
In the second and third year, the program offers both theoretical and practical courses, so that the student can start working on applications that are justified by the theory. Examples are the practical courses speech and language technology and autonomous systems (robotics).
The Bachelor’s program culminates with the writing of a Bachelor’s thesis. The Bachelor’s project is an original research, conducted independently. Examples of projects are a virtual car driver and a simulation model of learning a foreign language.

Master AI
The Master Artificial Intelligence is involved in designing and implementing intelligent systems. Main themes are autonomous and perceptive systems, cognitive robotics and multi-agent systems. The program contains core courses and optional courses. The master finishes with a final research project of thirty weeks.

Master HMC
In the Master Human Machine Communication emphasis is placed on improving the interaction between human and computer. The main themes are human factors, cognitive modelling and speech and language technology. The program contains core courses and optional courses in these fields. The master finishes with a final research project, possibly in combination with an internship.
