Language

Dutch first, English a close second

Will you need to learn Dutch to live here? International trade, centuries of immigration and historical ties with the rest of the world have left their marks. An important one is the preoccupation with learning foreign languages. Today English is spoken by most of the Dutch, and German and French can be heard regularly as well. However, Dutch remains the national language of the Netherlands: a Germanic language distinguished by its unique sound and pronunciation. Therefore, the answer to the question is no: knowledge of English is sufficient for study and daily life, but the Dutch will certainly appreciate you making an effort. You are most welcome to follow an introductory course to learn the basics.
