Eize Stamhuis is universitair hoofddocent Experimentele Mariene Zoology en hoogleraar Biological Fluid Mechanics & Locomotion aan de hogeschool van Bremen. Hij is tevens mede-oprichter van het Bionica Innovatie en Expertise Centrum. Inspiratie halen uit de natuur, daar draait het om bij bionica. Deze discipline probeert principes uit de natuur te doorgronden en de lessen daaruit te gebruiken om te komen tot innovatieve oplossingen voor technische of medische uitdagingen.

Voor veel technologische problemen heeft de natuur allang een oplossing bedacht. ‘De natuur exact imiteren is niet zo handig, maar we kunnen ons er wel heel goed door laten inspireren’, aldus Stamhuis. Als onderzoeker heeft hij zich gespecialiseerd in biofysica van zwemmende vissen en vliegende vogels. Hij laat zien hoe onderzoekers en ontwerpers kunnen leren van dieren en de natuurkundige wetten in de natuur, bijvoorbeeld van stromingsleer, het vlieggedrag van vogels of het zwemgedrag van vissen. Of het nu gaat om een auto gebaseerd op de koffervis of om het aanpassen van bootschroeven op basis van flipperbewegingen van een pinguïn, Stamhuis weet er alles van.

In zijn windtunnel op Zernike ontdekte Stamhuis de slimme kracht van albatrossen. Een verbond met twee vooruitstrevende ondernemers leidde tot de start-up Albatrozz, voor revolutionaire molenwieken.
