Not just a smoke-free university, but a smoke-free generation

09 October 2017

‘Op weg naar een rookvrije generatie’ [Towards a smoke-free generation]. Signs with this message appeared all over Groningen this afternoon. One of the locations is the front of the Academy Building, where it was unveiled today by Sibrand Poppema. The signs have been painted by children, and the aim is to draw attention to the importance of growing up in a smoke-free environment.

Children who go to a smoke-free school, play in smoke-free playgrounds and play sports at a club where there is no smoking if they are around are being given the chance to grow up completely smoke free. The national Alliantie Nederland Rookvrij [Smoke-free Netherlands Alliance] wants to draw attention to its aim with these signs. Several Groningen organizations have joined the Alliance, including the UG, the UMCG, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the Municipality of Groningen. Together these organizations have a clear goal in mind: to make Groningen the first smoke-free city in the Netherlands.

Towards a smoke-free university
Healthy Ageing is even one of the UG’s research spearheads. Partly for this reason the UG considers a smoke-free university to be very important. For a number of weeks now, smoking near the entrances to many UG buildings has been banned. And during the Healthy Ageing Week the Zernike Campus will be completely smoke free.
