New way to prevent injuries to anterior cruciate ligament

18 November 2015

An injury to the anterior cruciate ligament can have serious physical and psychosocial consequences. However, although everyone agrees on the importance of prevention, no-one has yet succeeded in reducing the number of injuries. PhD student Anne Benjaminse (RUG/UMCG) has discovered that prevention programmes can perhaps be improved using principles from the field of motor learning. Using a verbal external focus ('pretend you are sitting down') rather than an internal focus ('bend your knees') and video feedback should make it easier to learn to make the right movement and use safer landing techniques when jumping.
