Roelofs, C.D., MScPhD ResearcherCaspar's PhD project at the RUG is part of the ERAfrica project 'Addressing societal challenges of biotechnology in Africa. Towards balanced innovation'. The ERAfrica project focuses on sustainable crop-biotechnology innovation in Africa, which is seen by some as a potential contributor to increased food-security in Africa.

Caspar's PhD project aims to investigate under what conditions agbiotech can help improve African agricultural performance in a way that best benefits local farmers and consumers. Innovation processes need to be aligned with the local context and the the needs and interests of local stakeholders, such as local farmers, consumers, and policy makers, but also NGO's, public and private funders. For this purpose, societal, technical and political contextual elements will be investigated. Research methods in this project include deskresearch, interviews, surveys, focusgroups, and workshops.

Prior to the PhD project at the RUG, Caspar worked as a consultant in innovation policy at the Technopolis Group in Amsterdam. His field of expertise was health and life sciences with a particular interest in system innovation- and learning processes. He contributed to evaluations, impact assessment and studies for international and national public bodies. He gained experience in a range of methods such as system- and network analysis, interviews, case studies, literature reviews, statistical analysis, mapping exercises and benchmark studies.

Caspar obtained a cum laude Master of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences at the VU University in Amsterdam. During his multidisciplinary studies he specialized in international public health, and sociology of science. Here he gained expertise in a range of topics including system thinking, health promotion, knowledge development and dissemination. Caspar is bilingually Dutch and German, but is also fluent in English.
