The Groningen biologist Maarten Loonen has created his own version of Street View in the research village Ny Alesund. With the help of about 3,000 photos and dozens of videos, you can participate in the life of this small research village far above the Arctic Circle on Spitsbergen.
The Ny Alesund Street View can be seen on the website of the Dutch Polar Station, where Maarten Loonen is also keeping a blog of his work and experiences in and around Ny Alesund, that he updates almost daily.
North Pole – South Pole blog
Maarten Loonen has been researching barnacle geese for years. Every summer he spends about two months in Ny Alesund. He uses blogs to give an insight into the life of a researcher at the North Pole. He is also currently writing a blog for the NOS, the Dutch news station, where he reacts to the blog written by Erik Verhagen, the first Dutchman to winter at the South Pole.
The Dutch Polar Station is managed by the Arctic Centre of the University of Groningen. The Arctic Centre is part of the Willem Barentsz Polar Institute.
