The first part of this thesis concentrated on improving existing diagnostic techniques for the detection of glaucoma. A classification system for all types of visual field defects on static automated perimetry was developed and tested. Our research showed that this system enables an ophthalmologist to accurately diagnose most types of visual field defects. The second part of this thesis focuses on the safety of medication. The association between systemic antihypertensive medication and the development of glaucoma was studied. Our data suggest that use of calcium channel antagonists is associated with glaucoma, but this requires confirmation.
